I say this is Spain, probably during the early days of the Spanish Civil War. This is a Republican cafe in Madrid. The woman, who looks volatile enough, is about to leap onto the table--a waiter will have taken the coffee cup away--and dance. The customers stop whatever they are doing. Over at the right, just beyond the photograph, Ernest Hemingway, John Dos Passos and Robert Capa sit watching her, all the while dreaming about freedom and fame.
